Carob. Small evergreen tree from the Middle East. A nitrogen-fixing legume, it produces the well known carob beans which are edible, as are the young pods. The seed pods are used medicinal and bees love the flowers. Tannin is sometimes extracted from the bark. Needs a hot sunny site; hardy to about -5°C. Stratification: SC. Number of seeds: 30.
