Red alder. Another nitrogen-fixing, large, fast-growing tree which makes an excellent windbreak. The sap, buds and inner bark have all been eaten, the bark used for dyeing red, and the timber is used for furniture, turnery, clogs, canoes and to smoke fish. Likes a reasonably moist soil and sun or part shade; hardy to -20°C. Stratification: CS8. Number of seeds: 25.
