This box was hand-embroidered and made in Mezőkövesd, Hungary by the Matyó people. They have held this name since the 15th century when it was bestowed upon them by King Matthias. Famous for their richly colored clothing and stylized embroidery, the Matyó are well known throughout Hungary. In 1896, Matyó embroidery won numerous gold medals at the World Exposition in Paris.
